BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox purchased the contract of first baseman-outfielder Jeff Bailey from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Bailey was scheduled to make his major league debut Friday night when the Red Sox played the Detroit Tigers. Bailey, 28, was hitting .250 with nine homers and 40 RBI in 74 games with Pawtucket. He is in his 11th pro season, and has also played in the Florida and Montreal organizations. To make room for Bailey on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Matt Clement was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Clement has been on the disabled list all season while recovering from right shoulder surgery in September 2006. Ellsbury, recalled from Pawtucket on June 30, hit .375 with one RBI in six games with Boston.

Bailey, 28, was batting .250 with nine homers and 40 RBI in 74 games with Pawtucket this season. To make room for Bailey on the 40-man roster, righthanded pitcher Matt Clement was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Clement has been on the disabled list for the entire season as he continues to rehab from right shoulder surgery in September 2006.
